There are several tools you need for designing your web site. Below are listed freeware and trial resources for downloading these tools.Text Editors
HTML Kit - Free and a very good editor, just don't forget to add the 1,000,000 plugins

Image Editors
Irfanview - Free and supports all image file types
Adobe Photoshop CS - 30 day trial retails for $600.00, Previous versions are addictive, honestly if you don't want to know what you are missing after the thirty day trial has expired skip the trial and use freeware.
Fireworks - Great for creating images specifically for the web, Photoshop and Fireworks are the perfect combination, Photoshop has a web optimizer ad in called ImageReady, but it is totally ineffective and hard to understand. Fireworks is excellent for creating menus, image maps, slices, buttons etc. Since Macromedia and Adobe have merged I hope to see Fireworks replace ImageReady as the application bundled with Photoshop
The above are just two categories of tools necessary for webdesign as the tutorials move from basic HTML to more advanced topics more tools will be added. DreamWeaver and FrontPage are always alternatives but developers and designers should know how to make adjustments to code if necessary.
